THE BATMAN REVIEW
In this occasion, I will give my critical opinion about The Batman, a solo movie of The World’s Greatest Detective. I decided to give a review for this movie because I love Batman character so much and I want to share my opinions about the movie, what I like about the movie and what I don’t like.
The Batman is a comic book movie (CBM) Which tells the story of the adventure of Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), in his second year as The Caped Crusader. Young Bruce Wayne has to face The Riddler (Paul Dano), a cold-blooded killer who has a bitter grudge against the corrupt high-ranking officials of Gotham City. In addition to killing officials of Gotham city, he also always leaves riddles to be solved by Batman who is assisted by James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) who are forced to get involved in this adventure in order to save her friend.
There are several aspects that make this movie perfect. The first thing i like about this movie is the casting. Robert Pattinson as young Bruce Wayne/Batman gives an excellent performance. It is known that there were several problems in the journey of the making of this movie. But the main problem is that Ben Affleck left the project. At first, Ben Affleck, who had perfectly played Bruce Wayne in 3 DCEU movies (Batman v Superman (2016), Justice League (2017), Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)) was rumored will continue to play the character in this movie and take the position as director as well. However due to his mental health problem, he chose to leave the project. Warner Brothers studio and DC Comics immediately search for an actor to play the character and Robert Pattinson got the role. The Batman fans doubted him at first saying so many mean things toward him but for me as a fan of Batman and Robert Pattinson, this is a great news. And he successfully played the character and bring it into it’s best. The performance he put in this movie cuts out the slanted opinions saying he doesn’t suit Bruce Wayne/Batman character. "The Acting Range" that is shown by Robert Pattinson in this movie feels very intense and gives a depressive vibe. Not only Robert Pattinson, the other casts also gave excellent performances. I love how Paul Dano played The Riddler. He gives his best into this character and this version of The Riddler is very different from the last version of the character which portrayed by Jim Carrey in Batman Forever (1995). Jim Carrey successfully played the character and became iconic but for me personally, I like Paul Dano’s version more. This is how The Riddler should be presented. The next thing I love about this movie is the premise. The story line of this movie is very interesting because it's the first time that DC Comic and Warner Brothers dared to come up with such a dark story. At first the movie was rumored to be a part of DCEU and no complaints about that because DC Comics is currently building their own cinematic universe named DCEU (DC Extended Universe). But it is well known that the DCEU is very difficult to develop due to the many problems created by the Warner Brothers studio. The studio has repeatedly made actors who play superhero characters in DC comics disappointed with the decisions taken during the making of this cinematic universe. Perhaps because of this problem, Matt Reeves created another cinematic universe for The Batman and it is a wise choice. The plot of this movie is very well presented and seems to flow perfectly. I love how the director makes this movie very atmospheric. But this is the thing, because they come up with a very dark and heavy story, I think this movie is not for everyone. This is not the movie if you’re looking for a superhero movie that contains super powers and epic CGI fight like The Avengers or even Justice League. The next thing I love about this movie is the cinematography. The cinematography is so beautiful. Every shots show how depressing this movie could be. The landscape of the Gotham City shows you how messed up this city is. The shot of the Batman getting intimidated by the Riddler in a scene really creates a nervous atmosphere. This is a really beautiful work of art. The make up of each character is also one of the best part of this movie. The make up is extraordinary, especially for Penguin (Colin Farrell). A successful achievement for the make-up team alone, when they succeeded in turning Colin Farrell into a very Comic Accurate Penguin. Last but not least, the Soundtrack and the Scoring are the best part of this movie. The scoring is what really brings this film to life. When the first time I saw the trailer for this movie, the scoring has already stuck in my brain and ears. When watching the movie for the first time, the scoring gave me goosebumps when it played during a scene in the third act of this movie. And the selection of the song Something In The Way from Nirvana is very suitable to describe the state of Batman and the city of Gotham.
The thing that I don't like about this movie is that there are some cut scenes that are quite important. On the Internet, there are many deleted scenes from the movie. But the most interesting one is a clip that shows a scene of Batman meeting The Joker (Barry Koeghan) at Arkham Asylum. This scene displays a very interesting conversation and has the potential to be developed into a story in the next movie as a prequel. This makes me and so many fans out there wondering, will the prequel movie of The Batman put The Joker as the main villain? For some fans, it is too boring if they make The Joker as the main villain for the next movie because The Joker has appeared so many times in so many different movies. But for me personally, I think Barry Koeghan’s Joker looks so promising and we need to see the version of The Joker of The Batman universe at least once. The Joker is so iconic and since Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight, 2008), there is no actor who has successfully played The Joker in his encounter with the Batman character (except Joaquin Phoenix. He has successfully played Joker but the universe of the movie Joker (2019) stands alone with no Batman character in it).
The conclusion is, The Batman is the most realistic CBM ever made. This is the second best Batman Movie after The Dark Knight (2008). This movie is not for everyone since it came up with a very heavy story and maybe this movie will make non-fans bored in the first 1 hour. But as a fan, I can say this is the most epic DC movies. It is a good start to rebuild DC Comic cinematic universe I think DC should use this movie as a benchmark for the next movies. This is a very entertaining masterpiece.
