INTERSTELLAR
REVIEW
Interstellar, a movie
about space and time. I can say this is the most spectacular movie I have ever
watched. Telling a story about 4 astronauts traveling space in order to find a
new home to save human from extinction. Starring Matthew McConaghey as Cooper,
Michael Caine as Dr. Brand, Anne Hathaway as Professor Brand, Wes Bentley as
Doyle, David Gyasi as Romili, Mackenzie Foy as little Murph and Jessica
Chastain as adult Murph. This film managed to make the whole world shake their
heads in awe after watching it. Alright, I'll try to share what I think about
this film. Another Nolan's masterpiece!
The film begins when
Murph finds a coordinate of the dust blown by the wind and falls in her room.
At first Murph was not aware of the dust and thought it was the work of a ghost
living in her room so she felt the need to tell his father, Cooper. But as a
former astronaut who lives based on physics theories, Cooper refutes Murph's
opinion about ghosts and says if the dust and books falling in Murph's room is
gravity. Shortly after, Cooper realized that the dust formed a coordinate and
without hesitation Cooper headed straight for the location indicated by the
Coordinate. It turns out that the location they are going to is a secret NASA
station that operates with a big mission, namely saving humanity from
extinction. There Cooper met Dr. Brand, his former colleague while still
working as an astronaut at NASA and her, Professor Brand. They explain that the
condition of the earth is getting worse day by day and it is forcing them to
find a new place to live, in another galaxy. And they agreed to choose Cooper
considering his experience as a reliable pilot in the past.
The scene switches to
Cooper's house where Murph realizes that Cooper agreed to join the mission to
save humanity and will leave his family on earth. Murph insists on refusing and
asks her father to stay but Cooper's desire to save his family is overwhelming.
Murph shows the translation of the Morse code that the "ghost" sent
in her room through the dust that fell to Cooper. The message reads “STAY” and
Murph means that the message is for her father. But her father still refused
and kept going and the exciting space journey began from here.
This film is
extraordinary because it combines original physics theory and a touch of
charming editing technology. The duration of almost 3 hours will not feel boring
because the story in this film is very interesting and difficult to predict. We
all agree that Christopher Nolan is a brilliant director and he managed to make
this film very memorable with Nolan's twists. What I like about this film is
how Nolan made this film based on theoretical physics that exist in the real
world. Theories about time dilation, black holes, and even worm hole theories
appear in this film in the director's interpretation. I am sure, you will like
physics after watching this movie. the depiction of black holes in this film is
also very beautiful and will give you goosebumps.
At the beginning of the
film, Cooper says that when he returns from space, he will probably be the same
age as his daughter, Murph. This is also very interesting to discuss. This is
the concept of time dilation theory. According to the famous scientist Albert Einstein, time is relative. Einstein
assumes that “Time
is relative depending on the speed of the observer. Observers who stay on earth
will feel time is running normally. However, if another observer moving at a
speed close to the speed of light will feel that time is running slower, this
is called time dilation. This explains the sentence Cooper said in the scene I
mentioned earlier.
At the third act of the film, it is explained what makes the books in
Murph's room and the dust falls to form Morse code. This is caused by Cooper
falling into a black hole and ending up in a five-dimensional room that
resembles Murph's room, or rather behind Murph's bookshelf. Simply put, he has
come from the future to the past and is trapped in the 5th dimension. He
witnessed the argument that took place between his past self and Murph just
before he left on a mission. After a lot of things Cooper went through during
his space journey, he tried to prevent the past Cooper from leaving by trying
to hit the bookshelf causing some books and dust to fall. In a different
timeline, the adult Murph visits her old house and enters her room. She looked
at the watch Cooper had given her before he left and noticed that the clockwork
were moving like Morse code. she tried to translate it and got the equation
formula that Dr. Brands failed to solve. Suddenly she realized that the
"ghost" that dropped books, made Morse patterns with dust and led
Cooper and Murph to NASA stations was Cooper himself. This explanation answers
the confusion that I and maybe other audience feel while watching this film. It
is the twist that makes this film so interesting. This film seems to try to
make us as viewers think that the relativity of time is possible.
At the end of the film, Cooper wakes up in a plane that transports human
race, which Murph build with the help of the equations given by Cooper when he
was trapped in the 5th dimension. The plane was named Cooper Station. Finally
Cooper met the aged Murph and this meeting became a very moving and emotional scene.
As a closure, before the film ends, Cooper is told by Murph to return to space
to pick up Professor Brand who was separated from him when Cooper fell into a
black hole.
The thing that won me over this film apart from the plot is the score of
this film. Hans Zimmer managed to present an amazing score and relate to every
scene. Like when Cooper and his friends landed on a water planet where there
was quite an extreme time dilation. One hour on the planet is equivalent to one
hour on earth. Every “tick” in the scoring that accompanies the scene
illustrates how the years have changed on earth. This is a genius little
detail.
Behind the genius of Nolan as a director, this film is supported by the
acting of the players who are very good. Even Mackenzie Foy played very well
and could keep up with the senior names in Hollywood such as Michael Caine, Matthew
McConaghey, and Anne Hathaway. Overall, this film is well worth watching. This film shows how Nolan is obsessed with the concept of time. Maybe
this film will make people who are not fans of Nolan's work a little confused
but believe me, this film will open your mind about the universe. In fact, in
my opinion, until now there is no space sci-fi film that can beat Interstellar. The first time I watched the movie I was amazed by the plot, the score, the casts, and the more I watche it the more I love it. I can surely give this movie a 9.8 out of 10.
